Coursework
Year 1: 3 courses per semester and 3 6-hour summer courses in June
Year 2: 4 courses per trimester
Year 3: 3 courses per trimester
Year 4: 3 courses per trimester
Candidates are expected to participate fully in all classes, including reading, speaking in class, submitting written assignments in a timely fashion, and completing other assignments as provided by the instructor.
Clinical Requirements
1000 total clinical hours minimum required over 4 years. Candidates must see patients for a minimum of 7 hours per week. Candidates must also see one patient for three sessions per week for a minimum of one year. Candidates are encouraged to have approximately 10 patient hours per week in order to maximize learning during training. Candidates must also fulfill all NIP Treatment Center requirements for therapists when seeing patients, including session notes and other paperwork.
Supervision
348 total supervision hours minimum required over 4 years.
Year One: 40 individual sessions of supervision, 40 group sessions of supervision
Year Two: 40 individual sessions of supervision with two different supervisors (for a total of 80 sessions)
Year Three: 40 individual sessions of supervision, 40 group sessions of supervision
Year Four: 34 individual sessions of supervision with two different supervisors (for a total of 68 sessions)
PLUS: 40 sessions of individual supervision for the three times per week patient
PLUS: 30 sessions of individual supervision with a candidate in NIP's Supervisory Training Program
Additional supervision is required for candidates who have more than 10 patients in the NIP Treatment Center.
Candidates with 11-20 patients: 2 individual supervisors
Candidates with 21-30 patients: 3 individual supervisors
Individual supervisory sessions are a minimum of 45 minutes in length and group supervisory sessions are a minimum of 90 minutes in length.
Personal Analysis
395 total hours personal analysis minimum required over 4 years. Candidates must be in minimum of twice weekly treatment. For a minimum of one year, candidates must be in three times weekly treatment, preferably prior to or during the time they are seeing their three times per week patient. Candidates are also encouraged to undergo more intensive treatment (three/four session per week) for a period longer than the required one year.
All therapists seen by candidates must be approved by NIP, and at minimum, be licensed in his/her field and be a graduate of a recognized postgraduate training program with at least five years of postgraduate experience.
Evaluations
Candidates do twice annual written self-evaluations and evaluations of supervisors, as well as written evaluations of instructors at the end of each course.
Final Project
Candidates are required to write a 25-page paper as a final project, under the supervision of a project chairperson. This project begins in the third year, and is completed in the fourth year. There is an administrative fee of $175 for this project, due in the spring of the third year.
NIP Community Events
Candidates are required to attend four presentations offered by the NIP community. These presentations include colloquia offered by NIP’s Integrative Trauma Program, our online Continuing Education Program, annual NIPPA Colloquium, and other NIP conferences and continuing education events.
NIPPA Focus Seminars
Candidates are required to attend four NIP Professional Association (NIPPA) Focus Seminars during their four years of training. Candidates generally attend one seminar (usually held on Sundays) each academic year. At these seminars, original papers and works-in-progress are presented in an intimate, collegial setting.
Other Professional Training Events
Candidates are required to attend four professional training events offered by other analytic institutes or psychotherapy programs. Candidates will need to provide a certificate of attendance or a letter of CE credit to the Academic Manager for events hosted by other organizations.
