Dissociative material is a challenge to work with using traditional talk therapy methods. Newer models of practice that emphasize the body, present-moment experience, state specific processing and mindfulness offer useful techniques to manage and process dissociation.  In this introductory workshop, Dr. Gladstone will focus somatic psychotherapy as a means of working with dissociated affect.  Using clinical examples, she will demonstrate the use of experiential body based techniques that effectively target dissociative processes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Identify two types of dissociation, altered states of consciousness and compartmentalization.
  2. Identify how these two types of dissociation each requires different treatment approaches.
  3. Examine the therapeutic action in somatic psychotherapy with both types of dissociation.

Amy Gladstone, LCSW, PhD is a clinician, supervisor, workshop leader and social work educator with over 25 years of clinical experience. She teaches doctoral level courses on affect regulation and attachment in Rutgers DSW program and is on the faculty of the Integrative Trauma Treatment Program at NIP. In addition, Dr. Gladstone is a New York trainer for Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, a body based talking therapy. She is also certified in Somatic Experiencing. In her private practice, Dr. Gladstone specializes in attachment trauma and combines psychodynamic and somatic approaches to treatment.
