The case presentation considers the impact of the psychoanalyst’s adorned body and what lies on the surface of the body on the transference-countertransference relationship. Through rich clinical material, and a dive into psychoanalytic history, the author explores the importance of body-to-body comparisons and argues that psychoanalysis’s long history of trivializing and under-theorizing the analyst’s real body, and what lies on the surface of that body, be reconsidered. By holding the dialectical tension between the “inside” and “outside,” the therapeutic encounter can be enlivened and enriched as well as invite into the analytic dyad difficult to verbalize feelings and dissociated self-states of patient and analyst. In addition, the author explores the mutual anxiety and vulnerability that the body and its adornments can arouse for both participants, leaving patient and analyst avoiding “talk” when it turns to “body talk."
