“If all you have is a hammer, then everything looks like a nail” (Maslow, 1962). Experienced clinicians know that no single approach can adequately address the complexity of personality and behavioral change, and that the ability to integrate multiple therapy approaches enhances their clinical effectiveness. But how does an analytically-oriented therapist best do this?

This six-session seminar presents Relational Psychanalytic Integration, an approach to therapy that honors the clinically grounding framework of relational psychoanalysis and assimilates insights and methods from other approaches, CBT, for example, to enhance it.

We explore the field of psychotherapy integration, and the theoretical and pragmatic issues that arise in combining modalities in our work. Readings include papers by Bresler, Bucci, Frank, Gold, Lyons, Safran, Wachtel and others. Readings are discussed in the context of clinical work.

At the completion of the course, participants will have a coherent theoretical framework that, true to relational psychoanalysis, grounds them with integrating complementary methods in their psychoanalytically-based practice.

Class meetings are held on Mondays, Sept 17, 24, Oct 1, 8, 15, and 22, from 1:00 to 2:50.

Tuition is $450.

Registration in this seminar is limited. Participants must be licensed, experienced, and conversant with the basic literature and concepts of psychoanalysis. This course is required for NIP’s Certificate in Psychotherapy Integration Program (PIP). Register at Eventbrite for single courses. Learning Objectives

1. Students will be able to describe the historical and theoretical background of psychotherapy integration.

2. Students will be able to describe “assimilative” integration and how it differs from other major approaches.

3. Students will be able to integrate outside methods in their practice in ways that blend seamlessly with a relational psychoanalytic baseline approach.
