Emergent Properties of the Interpersonal Field
Saturday, September 23, 2017, 10:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Presented by:
Donnel Stern, PhD
Advanced CE Workshop: Emergent Properties of the Interpersonal Field
National Institute for the Psychotherapies
250 West 57th Street, Suite 501
Conference Room
New York, NY 10107
Discussion in this workshop will focus on Stern's way of understanding unformulated experience, dissociation and enactment, illustrated by clinical examples from his practice, as well as participants'. Stern's use of the concept of witnessing, and the ways in which his thinking relates to field theories, particularly Bionian Field Theory, will also be presented. The day will balance theory and practice, paying particular attention to the idea that it is the nature of the interpersonal field, especially its unconscious aspects, that determines the contents of consciousness. In other words, the field is responsible for what patient and analyst can experience--that is, think and feel--in one another's presence. Treatment, from this perspective, is a matter of loosening, relaxing, or thawing the field, in the interest of greater freedom to experience.
Learning Objectives:
- Define and use in therapeutic work the concept of unformulated experience.
- Observe and effectively address unconscious enactments in clinical work.
- Describe the difference between dissociation and repression and apply this difference to work with patients.
