Developmental Perspectives in Child Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy:
How Development Informs Therapeutic Action
The National Institute for the Psychotherapies
250 West 57th Street, Suite 501
New York, NY 10107
This seminar will discuss the various developmental perspectives in child psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The historical context to these perspectives will be revisited in applying them to understanding therapeutic action and how change takes place. Emphasis will be placed on an Interpersonal/Relational approach that privileges the micro-processes embedded in the nonverbal dimension of communication as well as working in the interpersonal field and the here-and-now transference/countertransference. Comparative technical approaches will be illustrated through play/talk therapy with latency and pre-adolescent children. Extended clinical examples will be discussed as well as using material from the participants in the seminar.
Learning Objectives:
To develop a foundation of developmental theories and to be able to apply them to conceptualizing therapeutic action.
To learn and be able to distinguish different types of technique.
To have a working knowledge of Interpersonal theory and its application to play therapy with children.
