What are the clinician’s guiding principles when confronted with issues related to morality? In raising this question, Freudian (superego) and post-Freudian (values and ideals) concepts as well as the analyst's subjectivity in the treatment process will be examined. How do political systems affect one's individual sense of morality? We will use Nazi Germany as an example to trace the psychological changes that were made possible by the exposure to a charismatic leader and steady propaganda.  This will give us the opportunity to gain insight into the psychology of bystanders.

Learning Objectives

  1. Discuss the relationship between ideals and one's individual sense of morality.
  2. Examine the importance of the analyst's value system and worldview in the analytic treatment process.
  3. Describe experiences that can lead to psychological "conversions" in totalitarian political systems.
